Enel X’s Global Retail Boosting Program helps private and public stakeholders reduce their environmental, economic and social impacts

Sustaining the environment, promoting inclusivity, reducing social and economic impact

At Enel X Global Retail our sustainability efforts aim to create products and services that generate value for the environment and people. We aim to achieve this goal through the Enel X GR Sustainability Boosting Program, which is based on three pillars: Circular Economy, which aims to tackle environmental challenges while also generating jobs and economic growth; Social Inclusion, which helps businesses be more inclusive in terms of accessibility and participation for the disabled and vulnerable; and Biodiversity, which promotes activities aimed at safeguarding plant and animal life.

Our Sustainability Boosting Program

Circular Economy

The current economic model is based on using resources and throwing away products at the end of their useful lives. The only sustainable model - the circular economy - aims to lengthen the useful life of resources as well as reduce their extraction. Our Circular Economy Boosting Program is based on five pillars: sustainable inputs, Product-as-a-Service, sharing platforms, extension of use life and recycling and reuse.

Social Inclusion

To be successful, any sustainability effort must focus on social inclusion. Our Social Inclusion Boosting Program aims to promote accessibility in all business activities. We do this through focusing on two pillars, "possibility of experiencing" and "possibility of getting". The former seeks to render services and solutions usable, functional and understandable; the latter focuses on rendering a solution accessible and easy to use in very different contexts.

Biodiversity

We consider biodiversity a fundamental part of our sustainability strategy. Our Biodiversity Boosting Program is built upon three principles: 360° impact, which means ensuring our business activities don’t conflict with efforts to protect and enhance biodiversity; engagement, which seeks to raise public awareness about the importance of biodiversity; and the human factor, whereby we make efforts to change the "customer-centered" model into one focused on the wellbeing of people and planet.

Scoring

This initial phase seeks to measure a solution's initial degree of Circularity and Inclusivity using two assessment methods: circular economy score and social inclusion score. The former takes into consideration different factors, energy and material flows, and sales models. The level of circular maturity is measured on a scale from 1 to 5; the higher the score, the more ''circular'' the solution.

Boosting

Using the data and results of the Scoring phase, we identify the areas with the greatest potential for increasing sustainability and the opportunities to achieve this. This is what we call the Boosting phase. Following a series of analytical steps - including value chain analysis and circular and social intelligence gathering activities - the phase concludes with an assessment of ideas and opportunities to be discussed with the technical experts who select and examine only the technologies and business models that meet Enel X Global Retail criteria for technical and commercial feasibility. These are subsequently developed and marketed.

Implementing

Once the ideas to be boosted have been identified, we reach the Implementing phase, which calls for defining detailed strategies for design, prototyping, testing and sales and communications campaigns.

Re-scoring & Reporting

In the final phase, Re-scoring & Reporting, a solution's new level of sustainability - achieved thanks to the implementation of the ideas resulting from the Booting phase - is measured, in terms of Circular Economy, Biodiversity and Social Inclusion, just like at the beginning of the process. This phase is vital for evaluating the efficacy of the Sustainability Boosting Program. The results are reported to the stakeholders inside and outside the company in order to communicate the positive impacts generated by the program.
