Biodiversity

Sustainable production to protect life on our planet

A precious resource at risk

The overexploitation of natural resources compromises the variety of animal and plant species in marine, terrestrial, and freshwater ecosystems. The extraction and processing of resources currently cause 90% of biodiversity loss. Data show that, between 1970 and 2016, the world’s fauna diminished by 68%; 75% of land not covered by ice and 66% of the marine environment were significantly altered by human activity; 1 in 5 plant species is at risk of extinction.

Preserving biodiversity is essential to have functioning ecosystems, and the livelihood of millions of people relies on it. Companies have a responsibility to contribute and help grow the awareness on this essential subject. Enel X Global Retail sees the protection of biodiversity as a founding value, and adopts a strategy for its support based on three principles:

Our approach

Sustainability

Taking into account what was written above, it is clear that in all communications activities the close link between biodiversity and sustainability must be kept in mind. Support for nature and biodiversity is nowadays considered one of the most important elements for measuring a company's commitment to sustainability, also because biodiversity generates so many benefits, including:

  • Mitigating climate change, supporting human health and creating jobs;

  • Together with healthy ecosystems, increasing the level of global resilience to extreme weather events, such as droughts, storms, and other disasters;

  • Guaranteeing the survival of the entire system that, in turn, ensures the survival of the human race;

  • Ensuring the functioning of all food systems, which depend on biodiversity (two examples: productive plants and fertile soil);

  • Reducing the mortality rate linked to environmental factors worldwide;

  • Mitigating air, water and soil pollution.

All these possibilities and resources that biodiversity provides must be managed perceptively, carefully and sensibly (in a word: sustainably) so that their use may improve living conditions for all. Biodiversity and sustainability must go hand in hand if we want to keep our planet livable/fit for life. The conservation of biodiversity and sustainable development are connected goals that can be achieved by, among others:

  • Supporting clients’ sustainability journeys;

  • Making concrete contributions to substantiate clients’s environmental commitments;

  • Meeting sustainability-related reporting requirements and rapidly-expanding mandatory disclosures.

Moreover, biodiversity directly supports agriculture, forestry, fishing, tourism, and other economic activities. According to the OECD, biodiversity also provides vital benefits to our societies and economies at the global, regional, and local levels, including: nutrient cycling, habitat provision, pollination, soil erosion control, and climate regulation.

Urban biodiversity

For Enel X Global Retail, the commitment to supporting biodiversity mainly refers to urban biodiversity, since most products and services provided by Enel X GR (Business Solutions, City Solutions, Residential Solutions) belong to the urban sphere. In this regard, one of the most recent developments is the integration of a biodiversity-positive rationale into Enel X GR operations – in line with Circular Economy and Social Inclusion principles – as a lever for sustainable value generation. To transform commitment into valuable benefits for countries, the Enel X Global Environment has been promoting initiatives that have enabled the creation of a comprehensive model within which:

  • a Nature-based Urban Model reference framework intends to offer an overview of the NBS solutions that can be integrated with the products and services offered by Enel X Global Retail, the aim being to facilitate and stimulate customers in adopting these practices, which are recognized as valid tools to address the challenges related to the environmental crisis.

  • a Nature-based Urban Scoring Model is developed to enable the a priori, concise evaluation of the nature-related performance expected from the selected combinations of Enel X GR solutions and nature-based solutions.

Nature-based solutions

In support of urban biodiversity, Enel X Global Retail proposes nature-based solutions, meaning:

"Solutions that are inspired and supported by nature, which are cost-effective, simultaneously provide environmental, social and economic benefits and help build resilience. Such solutions bring more, and more diverse, nature and natural features and processes into cities, landscapes and seascapes, through locally adapted, resource-efficient and systemic interventions".

The European Commission, which developed this definition, also stresses that nature-based solutions must benefit biodiversity and support the delivery of a range of ecosystem services.

Examples of nature-based solutions and associated targets for Enel X GR:

  • Redevelopment of urban spaces into green areas: B2B, B2G

  • Green roofs (extensive / intensive): B2C, B2B, B2G

  • Green walls (green facades / living walls): B2C, B2B, B2G

  • Smart lighting for wildlife: B2B, B2G

  • Integrated nests for wildlife: B2C, B2B, B2G

  • Apiculture: B2C, B2B, B2G

  • Integrated horticulture in buildings: B2C, B2G

  • Home composting: B2C, B2G

  • Microalgae photobioreactor: B2C, B2B, B2G

Enel X Global Retail intends to attain a strong market positioning and competitive edge in smart and sustainable urban development through technological convergence, electrification and nature-based solutions. This data-driven approach also makes it possible to share with the client outcomes achieved by adopting each solution.
