Enel X, driving the e-mobility transition

As Latin America transitions to sustainable mobility, electrification and decarbonization, Enel X is on hand to meet the challenge

e-transportation for smart cities

Electric transportation, both public and private, lies at the heart of smart, zero emissions cities that run on renewable sources of energy.nCities cover 3% of the Earth’s land surface but they generate more than 70% of all carbon emissions and account for 60-80% of energy consumption, so transitioning to sustainable mobility is key if we are to keep our planet habitable. Enel X wants to be an active part of that transition and is actively rolling out projects and investments to support the change to green transportation systems in areas around the world.

LATAM is transitioning to e-Mobility

One of these areas is Latin America (LATAM), where cities are under increasing pressure to electrify and decarbonize their transportation systems due to growing urban populations and pollution levels. In LATAM countries, 81% of the population lives in urban areas and the continent has the fastest growing cities in the world. Five of its countries — Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru — are among the world’s 50 worst in terms of air pollution levels, while five LATAM cities are among the 50 most congested in the world: Bogota, Lima, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro and Santiago de Chile.

Enel X in action: electric buses and charging points

Enel X is on site to meet the challenge: it has delivered or has won contracts to deliver financing, smart charging, infrastructure and/or energy services to over 1,300 electric buses in the LATAM region.

Enel X Colombia has won two contracts to deliver six electro-terminals and 401 electric buses to TransMilenio public transportation operator in Bogota.

Between them, the six electro-terminals will have a total of 473 smart charging points with capacity to recharge 870 electric buses. Five electro-terminals will be operational by the end of 2021, and the sixth will be inaugurated in 2022. In Chile, Enel X provides smart charging infrastructure for 435 e-buses that circulate on the streets of Santiago, with a total of 11 electro-terminals, 40 smart bus stops and 245 chargers.

In Lima, Enel X has launched the first electric bus, which is equipped to gather data in real time: the information will be used to lay the groundwork for a nationwide electric transportation system in Peru.

Lima’s first e-bus was made possible thanks to a collaboration between Enel X, the Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP) and Canadian public utility Hydro-Québec.

In Uruguay, Enel X installed a smart charging monitoring system for 20 electric buses run by private operator CUCTSA. Enel X is also in the process of  developing commercial relations aimed at achieving 100% electric transportation in Argentina, Brazil and Peru.

Enel X: innovative, sustainable, circular

Enel X is committed to driving the energy transition in LATAM and around the world, offering its clients an electric mobility ecosystem with cutting-edge products and services. For example, among its innovative offers in the LATAM region is Ebus-as-a-Service (EaaS),  an end-to-end model in which we deliver a combination of solutions ranging from financing for e-bus fleets to smart city services to intelligent charging solutions for e-buses and electro-terminals. All Enel X projects are grounded on principles of sustainability and circularity: in addition to recharging solutions, the company also offers its clients the possibility of acquiring green energy certificates to demonstrate that their e-vehicles are powered by electricity from renewable sources.
To keep global temperature increases to 1.5°C or below, cities must achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century. To do that, they must make everything — including their transportation systems — more energy efficient and interconnected. Enel X is committed to making sustainable electric transportation that runs on renewable energy sources available to everyone, everywhere.
