Enel X completes its first electric bus project in the UK

Enel X installed eBus charging infrastructure at a new depot for transport operator Abellio London Bus

Published on SEPTEMBER 08, 2022

Enel X has delivered its first electric bus project in the UK, helping to electrify a new depot for Abellio London Bus, a unit of Abellio Group and a major transport operator in the country.

The depot in Hayes in West London will initially support 12 state-of-the-art eBuses for zero emission transport. Enel X will work towards increasing charging capacity at the depot, which has been designed with scalability and easy incorporation of future technology in mind. It will be able to quickly expand the existing infrastructure to accommodate up to 56 eBuses.

This is the first of four eBus projects that Enel X will complete for Abellio in the Greater London area, with further infrastructure to be deployed at facilities in Battersea, Beddington and Twickenham.

Enabling eBus charging

Enel X has contributed to the Hayes depot by enabling its electrical infrastructure for eBus charging. It has installed six 300 kW Enel X Way charging stations that will run on Enel X Way software, which enables the optimization of charging schedules based on site load, energy costs, and bus timetables. Abellio’s eBuses have 382 kWh batteries that can be fully charged in just over three hours.

The company will also maintain and service the charging stations for the next 14 years as part of a long-term agreement with Abellio, which currently operates around 9% of London’s bus network, running about 800 vehicles in the British capital.

Zero-emissions mobility for sustainable cities

eBuses will soon become a familiar sight on London’s streets, as London’s world-famous red buses evolve to embrace the future. The UK’s eBus fleet is forecast to grow around 180% to become the biggest in Europe by 2024, according to independent advisory firm Accuracy.

Enel X shortlisted as Contractor of the Year

Our work with Abellio has resulted in Enel X being shortlisted for an EVIE (Electric Vehicle Innovation and Excellence) award in the “Contractor of the Year” Commercial & Industrial and Public category. This category recognises the achievements of companies that build retail, industrial and publicly-accessible EV charging stations and networks. The winner will be announced on 5 October at a dinner in London.

As Enel X, we are ready to foster the growth expected in the sector in coming years by supporting the further implementation and use of eBuses in the UK.
