Lighting plays a crucial role in any sporting event’s success. Which is why it’s important to rely on the best team to get the job right. Enel X and Signify are just such a team and together they won a public bid to install state-of-the-art LED projectors in Chile’s National Stadium – the country’s largest – in time for the 2023 Pan American Games, to be held in Santiago from October 20th to November 5th. A total of 224 LED projectors are being installed on the stadium’s four towers, with an additional 12 projectors being positioned beneath the marquee. Each projector can be individually remote-controlled, a feature that guarantees incomparable levels of energy efficiency. By applying the best, most energy efficient lighting solutions on the market, the partners are bringing joy to spectators as well as to future generations of concert goers, sports fans and participants of other large-scale events.

Taking the gold in energy efficiency

One of the key drivers of Enel X and Signify’s winning bid was the use of highly sustainable energy efficient LED lights, which not only reduce power consumption but also guarantee optimal lighting conditions for athletes and spectators. The project was developed in two phases: in the first phase, existing lighting equipment, lines and connections were dismantled. In the second phase, the entire infrastructure – existing equipment, transformer, ducts, wiring and electrical installations – is being replaced with highly energy efficient LED lights that help improve the structure’s overall sustainability performance. With this new technology, the National Stadium joins the most important sporting venues in the region in upgrading their lighting infrastructure, incorporating the world's most efficient solution to meet the standards required by sports federations for high-definition television broadcasting.

Overall installed capacity will be 320 kW, ensuring light uniformity and optimizing the illumination of the National Stadium’s athletic track. Additionally, an individual control system is being incorporated into the solution to permit independent orientation of each single projector installed, allowing for dynamic illumination of specific sections of the track. Finally, the LED solution will enable creation of exciting light shows, synchronized with audio and video. “For Enel X, it is a pleasure to be able to advance in the energy efficiency of such iconic venues as the National Stadium in Santiago,” remarks Karla Zapata, CEO of Enel X Chile. “We will also be implementing world-class innovation and technology, but in a way that is sustainable and efficient.”

With Enel X and Signify’s new highly energy efficient lighting solutions, Chile’s National Stadium will host a brilliant Pan American Games, ensuring a thrilling, joyous and immersive experience for athletes and fans alike.
