Supporting the energy transition in Taiwan

Working with Gogoro, Enel X has proved its VPP tech strengthens renewable grid stability

Published on APRIL 26, 2023
By allowing electricity to flow both to and from battery recharging infrastructure, Virtual Power Plant technology enables loading more renewable assets into the energy grid, supporting wide scale adoption of these power sources.

Together, Enel X and Gogoro - a global technology leader in battery swapping, energy management and electric mobility systems - are activating a network of 2,500 Gogoro battery swapping “GoStations” across 1,000 locations on Taiwan using Enel X’s Virtual Power Plant (VPP).

The project is being implemented in two phases: by the end of the first phase, 1,300 GoStations will be deployed; in the second phase - to be concluded by mid year/later this year - an additional 1,200 stations will be enrolled. The rollout follows the completion of a successful pilot program in 2022 and is the first commercial deployment of this technology in the world.

Transforming energy from a cost into an opportunity

From proof of concept to breakproof

The pilot program was crucial also for putting to the test grid management technology that is supporting Taiwan’s renewable energy transition as it demonstrated that Gogoro’s network could safely pause charging if there was a grid imbalance as well as provide energy back to the grid to meet increased demand. Once the demand subsided, Enel X’s VPP sent a signal to the Gogoro Network to safely restore grid consumption.

The Gogoro Network performed these services without causing any interruptions to Gogoro Network battery swapping customers, demonstrating that the network is an ideal resource to support Taiwan’s energy transition.

The process driving the energy transition for a sustainable world

The Enel X-Gogoro solution showcases how new, redistributed networks are helping support electrification efforts, which – in turn – are crucial to decarbonizing energy use and supporting the energy transition.

“Our VPP platform does this by aggregating thousands of these 'new energy’ assets into a resource that can help balance the intermittency of large-scale renewable power stations,” remarked Jeff Renaud, Head of Enel X Asia and Oceania: “We believe our work with Gogoro is a world-leading demonstration of what VPPs can do.”
